Fort Fisher

Fort Fisher was established in 1861 and used during the Civil War and World War II. Fort Fisher was named after Colonel Charles F. Fisher of the 6th North Carolina Infantry. The fort was mostly made out of the earth and sand which was ideal for absorbing the shock of heavy explosives.

In the Civil War Fort Fisher was attacked the first time in December of 1864 by the Union Army and Navy. The two forces battle against Fort Fisher for two days before they realized that the fort was to strong so they withdrew their forces. That was not the last of the Union Army or Navy they would soon be back in January of 1865 to take on Fort Fisher again. This battle had over 3,300 Union Infantry assaulted the land when they arrived, after a long battle lasting two and one-half days Fort Fisher had finally been captured by the Federal Troops. The fort may have been captured but it would later become of great use to World War II.

When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor the impact extended beyond the immediate area and would forever change the Wilmington area. Fort Fisher would not only become the firing range but would grow to become the anti-aircraft training camp. The fort would train to be effective against tanks and other armed vehicles. This large training camp would make the towns population nearby soar. This is the war that would transform Wilmington into the BOOM town.
