Kids Fishing Derby

Monday, July 30, 2012 - by OIA Staff
Stock up those tackle boxes and grab your rods and reels for the Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday, August 11, 2012. The derby, sponsored by Oak Island Parks & Recreation and the Oak Island Pier, kicks off at the pier at 10 a.m. and goes until noon. Participation is free and open to all youth ages 12 and under.
Rebecca Squires, recreation athletics supervisor for the town, says she expects 50-70 kids to try their luck at hooking everything from tiny pin fish to a 2-foot ladyfish like the one reeled in at the last derby.

There will be all sorts of fishing tackle awarded to those unable to reel in a big one, and every kid that catches a fish will win a rod and reel. The kids can even enjoy a free lunch afterwards (usually hot dogs or pizza).

Participants will need to bring their own rod and bait to the derby. For more information contact Oak Island Parks & Recreation at 910.278.5518.
