A number of people on Oak Island have wells for irrigation. For some, this may come to an end soon. The state statute regarding sewers and wells states that all wells within 100 feet of a sewer line must be closed or relocated before a sewer system can be started to prevent cross contamination. The Town of Oak Island has known about this issue and has addressed the state three times between 2007 & 2009; each time the state has denied the request to keep the wells. More...

A new signal light has been placed on Oak Island at the intersection of Oak Island Drive and Middleton Street, close to the new bridge intersection. This is the intersection where the second Oak Island Bridge will meet the Island. The stop light is now active to Green, Yellow, and Red as of December 11th. Please be aware. More...

The debate on Oak Island, regarding golf carts has to do with the speed limit. For years in the off season the speed limit is raised from 35mph to 45mph on Dolphin Drive. This year there are objections to the change by golf cart owners, the reason being, is if the speed limit is increased then golf carts will not be able to ride on those roads. Golf carts can only travel on roads where the speed limit is 35mph or lower. Dolphin Drive runs parallel to the Beach Drive and golf cart owners want to be able to get around to different parts of the beach using their golf carts on Dolphin Drive. More...

The new town hall is being built near the new police station, at the corner of Oak Island Drive and SE 46th Street. As that building is being built the old bed and breakfast, across the street, is being torn down to build a parking lot. The parking lot will have about 60 spaces and will have a breezeway connecting to the new town hall. The parking lot will benefit not only the town hall but the local area. The town hall is ahead of schedule at this point and will be completed in April, 2010. More...
