Investigation is still on going into the girder collapse December 3, at the second bridge to Oak Island that took the life of one worker and injured two others. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is still investigating. One girder came down last week, by crane, to be checked to see if it is damaged, leaving four of the concrete supports on the island side of the bridge. They are likely to be checked as well. There are also two girders up on the mainland side of the bridge. They are not sure if they will be removing or inspecting them as well. More...

Oak Island weather has been bone chilling this week. We are experiencing a weather alert of sub-freezing temperatures and had a dusting of snow yesterday. Many enjoyed watching the snow fall and of course the kids enjoy the day off from school. As a result of the snow and temperatures yesterday, the kids get another day off. There is ice on the local roadways; primary roads are in good condition, but secondary and residential not as well. Along bridges overpasses and pedestrian walkways are subject to ice and compressed snow this morning. More...

Pat Brunell is retiring after more than 20 years as clerk for the Town of Oak Island. She started out applying for a position as a water clerk for the Town of Long Beach in 1986. When she started, the town had just completed a sewer study, there was buzz of a second bridge and Johnie Vereen was mayor. She was 1 of about 50 employees and there were about 1,800 residents in the town. Yaupon Beach and Long Beach merged in 1999, and today the Town of Oak Island's population is close to 9,000. More...
