Oak Island also boasts of a rich history dating back to the late 1820ís when the government began constructing Fort Caswell, which now resides on Caswell Beach. The government also felt that the area needed a lifesaving station to guide sailors around the troublesome Cape Fear River and Oak Island was the place. Soon after the Oak Island Lifesaving Station opened, and in 1889 the Oak Island Lighthouse was complete and Oak Island had its first residents. The lighthouse still stands as a reminder of the areaís storied maritime heritage.

Oak Islandís continuous growth in both people and properties comes as no surprise to those who live in the beautiful coastal area. Yet the addition doesnít detract from the small-town feel and southern hospitality embodied by this charming community. Its ideal location between Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Wilmington, North Carolina attracts many who want to live the coastal lifestyle without the crowds, bumper-to-bumper traffic or bright neon lights. The peace and serenity of this south-eastern region has a resonance that will last for many more years to come.
